What is the Most Popular Dog Breed by State?

As dog lovers, it feels impossible to choose a favorite dog breed. We have heart eyes for Beagles, love snuggling with Golden Retrievers, could spend hours playing with German Shepherds…the list is endless. However, there are certain dog breeds that have risen in popularity due to their fun-loving personalities or adorable looks.

Since certain climates and lifestyles suit some dog breeds better than others, the most popular dog breeds differ in each state. For example, dog owners that live in urban New York City apartments may prefer smaller breeds, such as Yorkipoos or Shih Tzus, whereas the rural Midwest may be better for larger dogs, like a Dobermann or Rottweiler.

There are also certain breeds that prefer colder temperatures, such as Siberian Huskies and Bernese Mountain Dogs. Others thrive under the sun, like Border Collies and American Water Spaniels.

At PetWellClinic, we love seeing all types of dogs walk into our clinics for preventative vet care. In this blog, we’ll list the most popular dog breeds in the states we’re located in.

What is the most popular dog breed in the United States?

In 2022, the French Bulldog was named the most popular dog breed in the United States by the American Kennel Club’s annual report. Prior to this, the Labrador Retriever had held the number one spot for over three decades.

Frenchies are a smaller sized dog with big brains and adorable faces, making them a great choice for thousands of pet owners across America. Their popularity has been slowly rising across the nation in recent years, as they are known for being friendly and not needing a lot of exercise.

These dogs also reign as the most popular breed in New York and New Jersey, the home of four PetWellClinic locations. If you do have a Frenchie, it is important to prioritize regular vet care, as they are known for having extensive health issues.

While Frenchies are currently the most popular dog breed in the country, different states still have their own personal favorites.

Most Popular Dog Breeds By State

The Labrador Retriever continues to hold the most popularity in many PetWellClinic states, including:

  • Arizona
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Florida
  • Maryland
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • New Hampshire
  • Tennessee
  • Pennsylvania

Known for high energy, affection, and delightful personalities, it makes sense why the Labrador Retriever is such a beloved breed. They’re known as great family dogs to exercise and play with, and they absolutely love attention from their owners. Whether you want to play frisbee, walk around the neighborhood, or simply cuddle on the couch, you’re guaranteed to have a good time when you’re around a Lab.

While the Labrador Retriever reigns supreme in Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania, those states also all have unique state dogs that conjure a lot of pride and popularity.

Maryland

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever became the official state dog of Maryland in 1964. Known for its waterproof coat and powerful swimming abilities, the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a beloved companion for many Marylanders who enjoy outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. The breed’s loyalty and intelligence also make it a great choice for families looking for a faithful and trainable pet.

Massachusetts

It’s no surprise that the Boston Terrier is a popular dog breed in Massachusetts, where it was first bred in the late 1800s and named after its state capital. The breed’s “tuxedo” markings and friendly, sociable temperament make it a favorite among Bostonians and dog lovers throughout the state. The Boston Terrier was named the official state dog of Massachusetts in 1979.

New Hampshire

The Chinook are a rare breed of sled dog that are also wonderful for families and children. Chinooks are calm, friendly, and muscular dogs that are masters of obedience. They were first bred in New Hampshire in the early 20th century, and they became the official state dog of New Hampshire in 2009.

Pennsylvania

In Pennsylvania, Great Danes are recognized as the official state dog breed. They were originally brought over from England and were very popular with early settlers as hunting and guard dogs. While their size can be intimidating, Great Danes truly are gentle giants with well-tempered, friendly personalities.

Tennessee

The Bluetick Coonhound officially became Tennessee’s state dog in 2019, after having represented the state for 66 years as the University of Tennessee’s mascot. Prior to that, Tennessee had recognized dogs and cats that are adopted from animal shelters as the official state pet, similarly to how rescue dogs and cats are the official state pet in Colorado.

Louisiana

In Louisiana, the most popular dog breed is actually the state’s official dog, the Catahoula Leopard Dog. Originally bred for hunting, the Catahoula is a highly skilled working dog that is prized for its intelligence and loyalty. Over the years, the Catahoula has really become a beloved symbol of Louisiana’s unique culture and history, which explains its popularity.
