PetWellClinic Highlighted In Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association

161201_coverA recent article in the Journal of American Veterinary Medical Association addressed the increasing percentage of pet owners who struggle to afford veterinary care. It notes that while veterinarians today are able to provide better and more advanced medical care for pets than ever before, the cost of that care—or even basic care—is out of reach for many pet owners.

The JAVMA article features a handful of solutions across the country, including Dr. Sam Meisler’s PetWellClinics®. It reads, “Dr. Sam Meisler has taken basic care to another level. He owns two full-service hospitals as well as three walk-in wellness clinics dedicated to making preventive care affordable and convenient. Each PetWellClinic® offers veterinary services in four areas: wellness care, care for minor illnesses, care for chronic conditions, and laboratory testing.

The article explains how PetWellClinic® is able to offer more affordable prices by not having to maintain the overhead and staffing that’s required for surgical procedures. And by not requiring heartworm testing and an examination prior to vaccination, for example, costs become less of a barrier to owners seeking care. It notes that Dr. Meisler likens the clinics to Walgreens Take Care clinics, and that the mission is to serve as many pets at as many levels as possible.

The article also explores how PetWellClinic® saves clients time and money through the use of communication technology. “Clients can use the clinics’ site to register their pet’s information ahead of time, choose the appropriate wellness package, and even buy the package they want ahead of time. More recently, the clinics started a system by which clients can get in line for service virtually from home using the website,” it reports.

“Anywhere we can save time for the client and for us, we can ultimately save on costs which are passed on to the client,” Dr. Meisler says. “It’s not about doing wellness in the traditional way—as in making appointments by telephone, having a receptionist there to answer, using veterinary assistants and technicians who are being constantly interrupted by more pressing cases, and lots of waiting time for the client. Rather, it’s about thinking of new ways to deliver the business of care at lower cost without sacrificing quality.”

The article notes that PetWellClinic® attracts two groups of clientele: people who can’t afford as much and are looking for a cheaper way to treat their pet, and people who can afford more but like the convenience and features the clinics offer. Dr. Meisler maintains that the clinics create new demand, such as treatment of ear infections, for example. “Since our services are so affordable, we do a lot more ear cytologies and ear cultures than some traditional hospitals. I would argue this allows us to do higher-quality medicine,” he says.

With the founding of PetWellClinic®, Dr. Meisler is leading the way in providing veterinary services that make sense for today’s clientele. By operating convenient hours for non-surgical care, PetWellClinic® is able to offer substantially discounted prices for vaccinations, wellness exams, and treatment of minor issues such as skin or ear conditions. We also offer low-cost parasite preventative products and discounted prices on high-quality pet food brands at Knoxville Pet Food Company.

PetWellClinic® operates as a walk-in clinic for pets, with quick in-and-out service during convenient evening and weekend hours with no appointment necessary. PetWellClinic® has three locations: 10549 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37922; 7329 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN 37919; and 228 S. Calderwood Street, Alcoa, TN 37701.
