Getting a puppy is an exciting event that requires time and thought to find just the right addition for your family. Our vet care team at PetWellClinic® has taken the guesswork out of your puppy’s health. We know exactly what vaccinations are needed and when to vaccinate your puppy, all available in our convenient puppy packages.
Vaccinating your puppy is important to keep it safe from serious diseases. Following the recommended vaccination schedule boosts their immune system and keeps them healthy. Vaccines also play a big role in protecting public health by preventing diseases like rabies. PetWellClinic® has convenient packages so that your furry friend gets all the essential care they need!
Why You Need to Vaccinate Your Puppy
It’s important to vaccinate your puppy for several reasons. First off, vaccinations prevent serious diseases like parvovirus and distemper. These diseases can be really dangerous and even fatal for unvaccinated dogs. The puppy vaccination schedule helps their immune system fight off illness without them getting sick. This gives them a strong defense for the future.
Vaccinations also play a crucial role in keeping everyone safe. Some diseases, like rabies, can be passed from animals to humans, and rabies shots are required by law in many places. Additionally, the canine infectious respiratory disease complex and canine influenza vaccines are essential. This is especially true if you take your dog to dog parks, doggy daycare, kennels, or other social settings.
Core vaccines include protection against Lyme disease, which can be a concern depending on your lifestyle and where you live. Booster vaccinations help ensure your puppy remains protected as they grow.
And let’s not forget about the cost—vaccines are much cheaper than the hefty vet bills that come with treating serious diseases. Vaccinating your puppy is a smart move for their health, safety, and happiness!
How to Get Your New Puppy Vaccinated
One of the first things you should do when you get your new puppy is bring them to your local PetWellClinic® to get them started on the right paw. Our vets will vaccinate your puppy, give your puppy a thorough check-up, and schedule the rest of your puppy’s vaccinations tailored to their needs.
6-8 weeks
The vaccination process usually begins when your pup is 6-8 weeks old. At this stage, we recommend starting with the canine DAPP+L vaccine. This is essential for protecting against serious diseases like canine distemper and parvovirus. These shots are recommended for dogs every three weeks until they’re at least 16 weeks old.
12 weeks
Once your puppy reaches 12 weeks, they’ll need a rabies vaccine. It’s also a good idea to add the Bordetella vaccine to guard against kennel cough if your pup will be around other dogs. If your puppy starts their vaccinations at 13 weeks or older, they’ll need two DAPP+L shots, two to four weeks apart. This will be along with the Bordetella and rabies vaccines.
Other considerations
We also recommend a fecal check at each visit. Similarly, have them treated for roundworms and hookworms every three weeks while they’re getting vaccinated. And don’t forget about flea, tick, and heartworm prevention, which can start as early as 4-6 weeks. We offer both chewable and topical options, and our vets can help you decide what’s best for your pet.
It might seem like a lot to handle at first. However, the vaccination and parasite prevention schedule will keep your puppy healthy and happy. Plus, PetWellClinic® makes it easy and affordable with our puppy wellness packages. We’re here to help you give your pup the best start in life. That’s why we bundle vaccines and other services for great savings.
