How To Affordably Vaccinate Your Puppy

puppy-742616_960_720Getting a puppy is an exciting event, which requires much time and thought put into finding just the right addition for your family. At the PetWellClinics of Knoxville and Alcoa, we know that getting a puppy also brings a good deal of uncertainty about exactly what’s required to make sure the pup is off to a healthy start. Fortunately, we’re experts with helping new dog owners know what vaccinations are needed and when, and it’s our mission to offer the most affordable vaccinations.

The first step once you’ve found your new puppy is to set up an appointment with a veterinarian to have your puppy examined. Your vet will also help you set up the vaccination schedule that suits your pet’s needs.

For newly born puppies, the vaccination process should begin at 6-8 weeks with a canine DAPP+L every three weeks until at least 16 weeks of age. This vaccination protects against canine distemper and canine parvovirus, two diseases that are potentially fatal for dogs, especially puppies, as well as against hepatitis, parainfluenza and leptospirosis.

After 12 weeks of age, your pup is required by state law to be vaccinated for rabies, and if your dog will have exposure to other dogs add a Bordetella vaccine at this time as well to protect against kennel cough. While your puppy is getting the series of vaccines, it’s also recommended to have a fecal check at each visit and to receive a roundworm/hookworm treatment at three week intervals.

If your puppy is 13 weeks or older and receiving vaccines for the first time, he or she will need two DAPP+L vaccinations three weeks apart, plus the Bordetella and rabies vaccinations once each.

Aside from the vaccinations, you’ll also need to consider flea, tick, and heartworm prevention products when your puppy is as young as 4-6 weeks. There are chewable and topical options, and your vet can help you determine which product is best for your pet.

While it may seem like a lot to consider at first, following the advised vaccination and parasite prevention schedule will keep your puppy healthy and happy. And the good news is that you can find top-quality puppy care at affordable prices. The PetWellClinic offers wellness packages which bundle vaccines and other services for even more savings.
